The examples I have included here are a departure from my traditional work by either use of a different medium for displaying the work or by using Celtic designs in a slightly different way.

St. Drostan’s Teardrop.
130mm. x 90mm.
(5ins. x 3.5 ins.)
Pencil on paper
Copyright James M. Summers 1999.

Saint Drostan’s Teardrop was the first in a series of three conceptual works which attempted to convey the subject image as a reflection in a teardrop. The three works are influenced by and greatly indebted to the spherical reflection artwork of 20th century Dutch artist M.C.Escher. In each case the subjects were drawn from life using a spherical mirror.
In this instance, the Teardrop was designed in an attempt to unify the legend of Saint Drostan’s teardrop, the 9th century Book of Deer and the Celtic Abbey of Deer within one single image.

Central Buchan Teardrop.
130mm. x 90mm.
5ins. x 3.5ins.
Pencil on paper.

The third and final teardrop in the series was designed to convey a rural image of Buchan, Aberdeenshire and a recumbent stone circle, an archaeological feature unique in the British Isles to North East Scotland. The stone circle illustrated is a representation of the Aikey Brae Stone Circle* on Parkhouse Hill near Stuartfield, Aberdeenshire.

*The stone circle lies approximately one mile west of the village of Stuartfield and is located at Grid Ref. 959471 on Ondnance Survey Landranger Map 30.
